About

Honey, like wine, coffee, chocolate, and cheese, is part of America’s epicurean food awakening. Once you have eaten an exquisite honey, you will always know the difference between a generic honey and that of a raw product with unique local tastes and floral aromas.

Nucs

bee-package-2017.jpg

SOLD OUT FOR THE 2017 SEASON

Our nucs are five wooden plasticell frames that fit deep supers! They consist of capped and uncapped brood, pollen and honey. All nucs have a laying hybrid queen that is sensitized to Colorado.

Nucs have some advantages over packages. With our tumultuous spring weather, they are substantially more robust than packages. The queen is already accepted and laying. They contain more bees, brood, and some established food supplies in drawn combs. Nucs will also build up more readily into strong colonies due to their initial advanced maturity and size.

Nucs will be queened with hybrid queens that are highly sensitized to Colorado. We have been selecting and breeding queens who exhibit:

  • Good Honey Production

  • Hygienic Behavior

  • Successful over wintering

  • Gentle Dispositions

Queen Bees

We work with breeders who produce VSH (varroa sensitive hygiene) queens who are hybrids of Carniolan/Italian. The breeder queens originally came from Glenn Apiaries who worked with USDA scientists in developing Varroa Sensitive Hygiene, a naturally occurring trait in honey bees that causes the worker bees to detect, uncap and remove varroa mite infested brood. Our queens are the successful daughters of these breeder queens who are sensitized to our Colorado environment. Varroa sensitivity does not mean hives will be immune to varroa!! You must test your hives several times a year for varroa counts!

Unmarked Queens, $35

Queens will be available mid-April onwards.

Call Tim at 303-514-9257 to arrange pickup of Queens. There will be no mailing of Queens.
